Countersink gages and chamfer gages are usually hand-held, light, portable and easy to use instruments. They can also be mounted on bench stands if the parts being measured are small. They both perform the measurement through a plunger mechanism, but they don't measure the depth of the hole. Rather, they measure the largest diameter of the hole, where it intersects the top surface of the part. To convert the vertical motion of the plunger into a diameter measurement, the gages require an indicator with a special-ratio movement or readout.

Chamfer gages can be mastered against any certified flat surface. Both types of gages may be mastered against a part master that duplicates the specified chamfer or countersink. In most cases, the gage will perform like a direct-reading gage, in which case the indicator displays the feature's actual diameter. Alternately, if the chamfer gage has a digital indicator that allows presets to be entered, then it can still be used for comparative measurements, even if it is mastered on a flat surface.

Countersink gage is the most common instrument to measure countersink features. Gages of this design are fast, repeatable and provide clear answers without operator mathematical calculations. The precision ground and hardened plunger is placed in the hole, the base is pushed down tight against the part flat surface and the countersink size is read from the dial. Digital Indicators are also available. Countersink gage plungers are tool steel.

Countersink gage is a precision instrument designed specifically to measure the top (major) countersink diameter while chamfer gage measures the top (minor) diameter of a shaft end chamfer. Countersink gages and chamfer gages give you fast, accurate and repeatable readings on the shop floor or in the gage room.
