Dorsey groove gages employs a new principal of ball bearing movement to minimize movement friction and deflection to give direct indicator readout. This mechanism enables the checking of smaller grooves not offered by other gages of this type.
Groove Geges Features:
- Lightweight
- Compact
- Uncomplicated design
- Easy to use
- Portable
Groove gaging, although simple in concept, can be complex in application. Any groove gage used must have retraction in excess of the difference between the bore diameter and the groove diameter. Caliper type gages are often used, but linear action groove gages are preferable, since they are not dependent on a lever ratio and have a much wider range of adjustment.
Whenever specifying groove gages, take a note of the distance from the groove to the face of the part. The shorter the arms can be made, the less deflection they will have and a more accurate reading will result.
Contacts are available in two and three point styles. Two point gages may be set with gage blocks or a ring. Three point gages must be set with a ring. A three point gage has the advantage of being self-centering, but will not show out-of-round conditions as readily as two point groove gage.
Groove gages are furnished with .0005" or .001" indicators, .0001" indicator may be used with care. Indicator travel is not a factor, since retraction is away from the direction of the indicator.

Setting the zero on a DYL Groove Gage
I have two questions: (1) When setting the zero on Dorsey DYL gage with a Dorsey indicator with .0001 accuracy with a 5 revolution counter, I usually set a pre-load of 2 revolutions on the gage with the long hand on zero. Is this a correct method. (2) We have 5 Dorsey gage that have 3 point contacts. Can you purchase 2 point contacts? Is there any other methods for setting the 3 point groove gage? A standard Master ring is too heavy and our tool room has discontinued making special reduced special rings.
Thank for your help.

DYL
1) Yes you can set it to second rev., but you should mark that on dial. also indicator should have reversed rev. counter(zero zero is with indicator spindle in)
2) Yes you can purchase any of the arms. All DYS, DYL, or DYN will fir.
3) Master ring is only way to set 3-point arms. 2-point can be set with gage block.
